Dominic's post says to me that maybe those of us who are on the list should
introduce ourselves. Perhaps a paragraph or so: it would be particularly
nice to know where people are located.

I'm not sure that I qualify as "here yet". I'm trying
to finish my first Gurdy for the Over-the-Water Fest
next month. I'm fitting the bearings/axle assembly
currently, and hope to have the tangent box made by
the weekend. I was sweating the "chien", but may save
that for the class.

For those of you that I don't know from MIMF: I'm out
west of Ft Worth, make instruments, and play several;
most notoriously, left-handed fiddle.

Making this HG has been a real education and I'm
looking forward to getting to play it.

(Hope this is my first post. I'm pretty sure that the
last one got "et", but if I'm double-posted, that's
why...)

Ciao Alden, and ciao to everybody ;-)))! I just subscribed. What a nice idea to have an
HG mailing list!

OK Judith, shall I start??? But please, folks, DO THE SAME and introduce yourself!!!!

My name is Federico, and my job is to play the lute and the theorbo. I mainly deal with
the renaissance and baroque stuff, but i just LOVE the folk repertoire too. I am from
Italy (Rome), but I live in south France (Menton, French Riviera, at the Italian border).
I spend most of my time traveling around to play (my early plucked instruments, the HG not
yet!) as a soloist, or with some ensembles and orchestras.

I am an old cyber-friend of Alden. Some years ago I posted a request of infos about the HG
and its repertoire in a Usenet newsgroup, and Mr. Hackmann very kindly replied... Thank
you Alden, I will never forget how much you helped me ;-)! Later I got in touch with
Marcello Bono, the Italian HG player (and maker) specialized in the baroque repertoire.
Marcello made a simple (but very good) instrument for me, and introduced me to the basics
of the HD technique. He is an EXCELLENT player, and a nice fellow too. "Professionally" I
used the HG only once, in one single piece in a CD of renaissance neapolitan villanelle.
Not much, but I hope to have more chances in the future :-)!

Th- Th- That's all, folks!!!!

Love from

Federico (just back from the beach!)

hello everybody, i just subscribed too. Excuse me for my english

My name is Phil Viron, I live in Pontoise ( 30 kms north Paris ).

I play flute (irish music), 20 pouces french bagpipe and just a bit
hurdy-gurdy build by my best friend Jean Canteteau from Pontoise.

Federico, we met last October in Pontoise. I remember you
because you played in the hall of the Salle des Fêtes and i don't
think that there are lot of italian-origin lute players in Menton
interested by hurdy-gurdy ;-)

We organize in Pontoise each year the "Fête de la vielle" in
october ( the second week end usually) . I will give you soon the
program and the exact dates.

this list is a nice idea !

Well, since I suggested a bio, here goes:

I am Judith Lindenau, live in Northern Michigan, and work at my 'day job' as
an association manager. My job requires quite a bit of travel within the US,
and --recently-- to Eastern Europe and Russia.

I play hammered dulcimer, Irish whistles, and hurdy gurdy...All with
dedicated amateur enthusiasm, which (I hope) compensates for proficiency.
Playing hurdy gurdy in Northern Michigan is a lonely job, but we are
developing a group of players (five at our last Michigan get-together) and
I've also been able to attend some gurdy gatherings and take some lessons.

Alden and Cali are building me a new instrument--I currently play their
Apprentice Gurdy, and I am anxious for a larger model. I am delighted with
this list: hopefully I will meet some of you in my travels.

Hi,

Personal bio:

My name is John Peekstok. I live in Seattle and have been playing the HG very
part time for about a year and half. My wife Anna is the real player in the
family. We perform together as Telynor, where I play cittern, guitar, Celtic
harp, lap dulcimer, etc. Anna also sings and plays nyckelharpa, octave
mandolin, and fiddle. I have one of Olympic Instruments' Minstrel model
gurdies. Anna has an instrument built by Michael Hubbert and also a Minstrel.

During the day I work for a company called Dusty Strings, which builds folk
harps and hammered dulcimers and operates a large acoustic music store. The
manager of the retail shop is something of a French and Breton music fan, so
there is a good selection of CDs and books relating to hurdy gurdies and/or
French music. We also sometimes carry Olympic Instruments hurdy gurdies.

In my fictional free time I am the board president for the Over the Water
Hurdy Gurdy Association and camp director for the Over the Water Hurdy Gurdy
Festival. More info on that at:

WOW! Yes Phil, I do remember you very well :-))! You were one of the organizers of the
Festival, if I am not wrong (or, at least, you were helping the organization). I also
remember you playing your Irish flute (it sounded very nice indeed!)

As it is perfectly in the topic of this list, I would like to spend some words about this
Festival: it was a short but intense full immersion in the French folk HG scene: we had
one HG lesson on Saturday (there were also classes of French bagpipe and folk dance, if I
am not wrong). The HG teachers were two: an excellent young French player (what's his name
Phil? I LOST the paper with his coordinates :-(( ) for the beginners and intermediate
students, and the famous Patrick Bouffard for the more advanced players.

On Saturday night we had an evening of folk dances, with about 400 people involved, live
music, typical French country food, etc. etc. The "evening" went on until 6.00 AM !

On Sunday those who survived could enjoy a day of beautiful concerts. I found the
organization very good, and the whole atmosphere friendly and competent. If you are
interested in the French folk repertoire the "Fête de la vielle" in Pontoise is definitely
for you ;-)!

Hello all,

My name is Joanne Andrus. Besides hurdy gurdy I also play recorders,
flutes (Irish and renaissance), renaissance lute, shawms, harp, crumhorn,
pennywhistle and other various and assorted instruments (rommelpot for
instance.) As you can guess from that list I play mostly early music but
love folk music too.

I live south of Seattle, and if my name looks familiar to you, it's
because it's posted on the website as the contact for the Over the Water
Hurdy Gurdy Festival.

The hurdy gurdies I play are a Volksgurdy and Minstrel both built by
Olympic, and soon a Symphonie built by them as well.

I look forward to getting acquainted with those of you I don't know yet.
I can see that we have much in common already, Phil playing the flute,
Federico playing lute and Judith playing Irish whistles....

Subject: Mailing List: hello intro

Hi there/salut/ciao viellistes!

First of all thanks to Alden and Cali for making this list happen. I think
it's a great idea and much needed!

I'm catherine keenan, hg player living in Toronto. (That's canada, folks!)
I have two instruments from Denis Siorat in France, both electro-acoustic.
I'm also about to babysit a lute back by Jean-Claude Boudet.

I love French music, and play a little baroque as well, and have a little
band here called Vielle a Rousse. (Bad pun, sorry everybody.) We play some
of the modern French repertoire and some French style tunes of mine. I
found the hg in England a dozen years ago or so and was really inspired by
the music of the massif central, and memorized as many of Patrick Bouffard's
notes as I think might be possible! Also helped and inspired greatly by many
wonderful players: Diego Abriel, Gilles Chabenat, Philippe Mounier (I think,
the Philippe with the red glasses), Nigel E., Cliff Stapleton, Pierre
Imbert, Frederic Paris (Vielleux de Bourbonnais et les Chavans), Isabel
Pignol, Gregory Jolivet and of course, Valentin. Does anybody like any of
these players?

I have been working for a long time on a cd of my pieces, and it's still not
done! Some pieces with the band, some a little bit avant garde. Slowly,
slowly... but I keep practising, and this year finally have added coup de 6
to my technique.

Like Judith Lindenau, (Hi J!) I too am living in the death valley of french
music, the centre of north america, so I'm really looking forward to the
chance to crash the bagpipe festival in Vermont at the end of the month,
where we might actually get a french session happening!, and most
importantly for us here -- to the OTW HG fest in Port Townsend in sept.
Sessions galore, fabulous teaching from Pierre Imbert and Marcello Bono and
plenty of french tunes from the irreplaceable RT Taylor! And the food!

Really looking forward to hearing the news from everybody out there, all over.

Hi there !!!

I'm new in this list.. let's introduce ourselves..

I play an electrocustic HG made by Denis Siorat, (3 melody strings, 3
standard drones and 2 trumpet strings) among other instruments, mainly a lot
of bagpipes and some flutes : galician gaita, bulgarian gaïda, uilleann
pipe, scottish smallpipe, low whistle, three holed flutes from Spain,
selyeflöte...

Actually, I'm playing in two bands : SLÀINTE (as you can guess, celtic

I go every year to the St.Chartier festival, a true heaven for HG/Bagpipe

how 'bout:

Modern Centre France technique:
Coup de quatre, the Frederic Paris/Bernard and Jean Claude Blanc group with
Patrick Bouffard at 16 years of age. PB's first recording; #3, (something
and Tiennet) was done on the first take. There are others, esp, PB ones.
This is my fave. Also you can go anywhere in the world and people will be
able to play these tunes.

Historical CF technique:
La Vielle en France. Not so much for listening (field and/or very early
recordings) as learning good tunes and shows you don't have to have coup de
6 or even 4 to play wonderful music. It shows how much good music can be
made with coup de deux. On Silex, y225109

The English style
Whirling Pope Joan by Nigel Eaton with Julie Murphy. Cooking a very hot
curry from a straight backed chair, if you know what I mean.

The twilight zone
Anything by Valentin Clastrier. (stand back, absorb what you can of

Where did you find the Jules Devaux?

If you send me info on these two CD's, it will (eventually) make its way
into the HG discography on the website.

I'm not as much into the French dance tunes on the hurdy gurdy as most other
people. I also tend to go for good music that happens to use HG, rather than
HG as the main thing on an album. Here's a few of my favorites:

Garmarna -- "Vittrad"
Big rock music with ethnic instruments and tunes from Sweden. Omnium #2008D.

Malicorne -- "Almanach" (or any other of their first four albums on the
Hexagone label).
Comes across like big rock music, even though the only electric instrument is
a bass guitar. Maybe my favorite band ever. France.

Melusine -- "France Folk"
Very beautifully done a capella singing of trad and medieval French songs
with great tunes interspersed, cunningly played on HG, fiddle, accordion, and
pipes.
Auvidis Ethnic #B6833.

William Pint and Felicia Dale -- "Port of Dreams"
Mostly nautical music, great singing, great songs and tunes, great
arrangements, nice takes on some HG tunes.

Telynor -- "Sprig of Thyme"
This is one of my band's albums. Fortunately enough, I'm in love with my
wife's HG playing. And tune writing. "The Bar Room Bransle" and "The Crystal
Bransle" are both brilliant. Also a fair bit of nice nyckelharpa playing,
vocals, cittern, etc.

OK, so here I am, the lurking Listmaster.

My interest in the HG dates to about 10 years ago, when my wife Cali
introduced me to it. I should mention here that Cali and I come from
significantly different backgrounds. She had quite a bit of formal
training and a particular interest in the baroque era - she joked that she
had vowed not to sing or play anything written after 1650. I was a
Deadhead, just starting to discover traditional music via Steeleye Span,
Pentangle, Silly Wizard, et al. We met somewhere in the middle. Anyway...
Cali had been interested in the HG for a long time, and she bought a
MusicMakers kit, back in the days when MusicMakers was simply reselling
Hughes Dulcimer Co kits.

Neither of us had any serious woodworking experience or any familial
tradition. We put the kit together, figuring out which parts were OK and
which were wrong and needed replacement. Eventually (in spite of the
instructions) we got a semi-playable diatonic instrument with no dog. It
seemed to us that every tune we played it on begged for the dog sound or
for some notes we didn't have, so we set about building another. Having
heard Anna Peekstok of Telynor and then the circle of HG players at
FolkLife, we knew that better things were possible than what we had. There
were a number of false starts.

We heard that Micheal Hubbert was retiring or at least semi-retiring from
building HG's, and we ended up buying his Volksgurdy design. To do this, we
travelled to Mendocino and spent 3 days with him, shooting 24 hours of
videotape as he explained the process and the tools. From that time, it
took over a year for the first completed Volksgurdy to roll out of our
shop, which at that time was in our living room. That was in 1993, I think.

Since then, we've designed several instruments and built others in more
traditional patterns. We've built a shop, which we're outgrowing. To help
us learn to play, we started the Over The Water Hurdy-Gurdy Festival (then
called the Indianola HG Festival), with Pierre Imbert as instructor. The
festival is now in its fourth year (coming up soon!), thanks to the efforts
of a great team of organizers, the Over The Water Hurdy-Gurdy Association.

This summer we made the great pilgrimage to St. Chartier, which I'll talk
about sometime in the near future.

Hello everyone
My name is Xurxo Romaní. I am from Galicia and now in live in Barcelona, Spain.
I play hurdy-gurdy, Galician bagpipes, mandola, bouzouki, and mandoline in the
group Ondina Xana. We try to combine the celtic-Atlantic sounds of Galicia with
the musics of the Mediterranean.

I dreamed of having a HG since a little child. Galicia is the only country in
the Iberian peninsula that keeped the HG alive till this century (the 40s
approximately), but there is not such tradition as in France, of course.
Galician "zanfonas" are the closest relatives to the organistrum in all Europe,
and they lack the "dog" and all that comes with it. I decided to buy a foreign
HG just because they were cheaper, better, with expanded possibilities, and
easier to find. I bought my first instrument in Saint Chartier 4 years ago, and
I have learnt almost by myself, though I have attended two "courses" with the
Iberian HG association with Gilles Chabenat and Nigel Eaton. Most of my
technique is derived from the records I buy and what I see when I go to the
"Meca" (that is Saint Chartier) every year. The HG society magazine also helps.
My vielle is a a traditional "vielle alpine", guitar-shaped, made by Jacky
Rageade, from Le Broc. I am very happy with it, but I will need an additional
electroacoustic one (Siorat?Mousnier?) in 2-3 years.
My favourite HG records: anything by Gilles Chabenat, and "vanilla" by
Blowzabella. Clastrier is a monster, he is years-light away talking about
technical skills, but his records are too... ¿demanding?

In the web pages of my group you´ll find something about the history of the
instrument in Galicia (in Spanish and Galician unfortunately) but there are many
photos you´ll like. HGs from the Chemin-de-Saint-Jacques´churches and so on.
Browse around the pages and you´ll find many interesting sound files. Focus your
attention on "vals de emma", a beautiful composition for HG, made by my friend
and Ondina xana´s bagpiper Xose Sancho.

Hi Cath -- I do play but tendonitis has nixed that for a while. I don't
have a big collection of tapes or CDs to choose from but I enjoy the stuff
I bought at St. Chartier in '88 (Marjy Fiddler my sister was there too)
like Nuit Bleu by Chabenat...

I'll be at the workshop for the weekend only, to dance and enjoy all the
group's efforts!

Subject: Mailing List: Introduction

Greetings all,

Well, having seen a few introductory messages over the past days, I figure
it's probably about time I cease lurking & make my own small contribution.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand - an area of the globe not noted for its
involvement with HG's. As far as I have been able to trace, there are only 4
instruments in the country apart from the 2 I have made. Of those 4, only
one gets any use at all and that is only when I go to the owners place &
threaten to steal it .....

I got bitten by the HG bug during a visit to England in 1984. I saw
Blowzabella in concert, and was determined that one day I would have a HG of
my own. In addition to HG, I play accordian, guitar & bouzouki with 2 or 3
different groups here in Auckland.

Being a complete novice when it came to HG's 6 years ago, and having no
Internet access, I didn't know where to buy one from. A luthier friend had a
set of Grandchamp plans for a guitar-bodied instrument, and I was able to
build that HG under his instruction until he moved out of town. I had to
finish the keybox, bridges, and wheel myself - and this was where I had all
the problems.
A change of job meant I had Internet access, and I got in touch with Alden,
who was able to give me enough information so I could get the HG into
playable condition. Since then, I've also made a luteback HG from plans for
a Pajot instrument.

The HG recordings I have been able to get hold of include Blowzabella, Nigel
Eaton, Rosbif, La Ciapa Rusa, Citania, Le Gop, Cafe Charbon, La Musgana and
Marc Perrone. All very inspiring stuff! I also have a copy of Doreen
Muskett's tutor bok, and the accompanying tape, as well as a videotape of
the HG/bagpipe orchestra formed for the 25th St. Chartier festival, which
have both been invaluable for learning to play the beast ....

There is a lot of interest in the instrument here, but I suspect that may be
due to its novelty value. I am in the process of adding transducers to the
luteback instrument to try & get a better sound when playing over a PA
system. Most microphones have problems when it comes to bringing out the
sound of the melody strings ( I use 2 violin D strings tuned in "D" unison
at present)

I have hopes of eventually getting to the Over The Water HG Festival, but
until then I will have to soldier on in solo mode.

As the old song goes .. "Keep that wheel a-turnin' .. "

Best regards at all,
Greg

Well... here we go :

LA MUSGAÑA "Lubican" Green Linnet : Yeah, my favourite spanish
band. Listen to Rafael Martin playing on each track : dances from
Castille-Leon in 5/8 (charrada), marches, pasodobles, jotas.. always beside
to Quique Almendro's galician bagpipe and "gaita charra" (castillan tabor
pipe), Jaime Munoz (flutes, clarinet, melodeon) and Luis Delgado (ethnic
drums) Great stuff !!

BLOWZABELLA "A richer dust" : What can I say about Nigel? ..
Excellent composer, brillant player.. .A genius. He's the pioneer in the
english way of HG playing. This is the best Blowzabellas's album for me,
besides "Vanilla".

DEDALE "No past" & "Live" : One of the best french folk bands.
Contemporany folk on more or less acoustic instruments (HG-melodeon-flutes &
bagpipes-bass-guitar). Isabelle Pignol plays an electroacustic HG made by
Denis Siorat, among other models. Norbert Pignol (her brother) is considered
the best melodeon player in France. Wow !!

Other favourites : LA CIAPA RUSA (Italy), ULMAN (Germany), HEDNINGARNA &
GARMARNA (Sweden), ROBERT MANDEL (Hungary), ..and of course all great french
bands as LA CHAVANNEE, LES BRAYAUDS, TARIF DE NUIT, FUBU, PATRICK BOUFFARD
TRIO, YOLE.......

I'm seeing a lot of familiar albums here. I also like Eaton, Chabenat,
Blowzabella, Garmarna, Malicorne, etc. A little Clastrier goes a long
way... I found a new Bouffard release a couple of weeks ago: "Roots 'n
Roll", where he plays with several different bands.

A CD I haven't seen mentioned is Les Chiens Jaunes. I especially like
where the HG trio plays Danse Macabre. I would never have thought to do
that, but it's wonderful.

For a change of pace I enjoy Barb Dwyer's CD "Riding the Wild Gurdy
Gander", and what I am listening to in the car these days is the new Pint
& Dale "Hartwell Horn" which has lots of HG.

Greeting group.

I have been following with great interest all the selections of music, and
really must do something about tracking it down in the cultural wasteland known
as Hamilton Ontario. By way of introduction, I fell in love with the french
music about two/three years ago. Unfortunately, I am what you would refer to as
"hurdy gurdy" challenged, and am slowly working on building one, so most of my
time is spent learning the repetoire on fiddle.

Anyhow, one thing I haven;t seen on the list, though not a CD is a group called
Lo Jai. Found the cassette in Hamilton Public Library, and does some really
good stuff with hurdy gurdy and bagpipe. I have no idea of current availability
though.

Hi Jim,

The first Lo Jai album is only on cassette. There is a second Lo Jai
album available on CD called Acrobates et Musiciens (Shanachie 21009)
It's not so much the traditional sound of the first album. The hurdy
gurdy player is our good friend Pierre Imbert who teaches at the Over the
Water HG Festival. He also plays on the fourth Ad Vielle Que Pourra
album called Menage a Quatre (Xeno 4048)

I hope you have a cd shop that will do special orders for you. :-)

The Michigan Gurdy Gathering was out in force at the Midland (Michigan)
Dulcimer Festival this weekend. We had five players in attendence for our
Saturday workshop, and about 20 onlookers, two of whom have plans to acquire
an instrument in the very near future.

Our workshop plan is to introduce the curious to the instrument: David Smith
brought a photo file and did a history; Luke played a couple of the Massif
tunes; Dave Leonard discussed the workings of the instrument and
demonstrated the one he built from a guitar body; and then we all
played...and kept right on playing through the afternoon and into the
evening.

Michigan Dulcimer Festivals aren't "folk" festivals as the rest of the world
understands them, but they are acoustic music festivals. The preponderance
of the attendees are hammered dulcimer players, of course, but a wide
variety of music is represented...and the Gurdy Gathering is becoming an
established (and even welcome) part of these festivals. Our next meeting
will be at the Wheatland Folk Festival (as the rest of the world understands
folk festivals)on September 10. If any of you are planning to be there,
e-mail me and we'll contact you about the Gathering.
