The progress reports

Each week (hopefully) we update this page with new photos of instruments in progress. The updates are usually made on Monday.

We hope that you enjoy seeing the progress on your instrument and those of others who have them on order.

Week ending August 26, 2002

The shop and studio remodelling continue apace - taking advantage of the good weather and a fortunate meeting with a drywall contractor when I went to Kingston Lumber, the shop is much further along. So here we go - first the studio beams and floor:

The final paint coat has been applied, and the beams have been sanded and gotten their first coat of spar varnish. This finish brought out an unexpectedly beautiful color in the seasoned wood.

:

The studio floor has been carefully vacuumed, and here is being cleaned and wetted with a carpet cleaner to get it ready for levelling with Fixall.

Another part of the floor after the Fixall has been applied.

The star pattern has been laid out, and the first segments installed. The flooring is a cobbled wood style, made from 3/4" thick pieces of clear cedar 2x4 lumber. These days even this much clear cedar would cost a small fortune, but we were fortunate enough to be aided by a local resident who was replacing his deck. He offered us the old deck material for free. About half of it was rotted, but only short lengths are needed for this style of flooring, so we cut out the bad parts and saved the good parts on the front porch for several months to dry out.

The outlines of the star are finished, and filling the center has begun.

A double line of blocks has been laid along the wall, and the herringbone pattern has been laid to fill the space between the star and this border.

Meanwhile in the shop...

Here's Alden (me) working to hook up the last of the electricals so the insulation and drywall can be installed.

The drywall is up!! (not shown: moving all the tools out and insulating the remaining two walls.)

And here's the north wall all taped and mudded.

The west and south walls in similar condition.

See last week for more pictures.
