The progress reports

Each week (hopefully) we update this page with new photos of instruments in progress. The updates are usually made on Monday.

We hope that you enjoy seeing the progress on your instrument and those of others who have them on order.

Week ending December 30, 2002

We missed a week's update for a sort of Christmas vacation. We spent Christmas Day relaxing - those of you who know us personally will know what an amazing event that is! Happy holiday wishes to all!

VG36: now what was the question? Yes, really...

VG37: the soundboard is glued on, the channel cut for the binding, and the first plaques are fitted. Only about 80 more to go... ;-)

VG39: fitting and positioning the soundboard

VG40: gluing in the top braces

"The Monk": the keys are cut and are being fitted (the top keys too, they're just not in the picture.)

Pegheads for VG37, 38, 39,. 40, and 41 being milled and cleaned up.

Grandchamp: the new wheel is in and is being trimmed and trued

Justin's HG has a new set of keybox sides - but I didn't take a picture.

The Reichmann is back on the bench, being set up for a new owner.

The Colson wheel and shaft, ready for surgery.

The Colson wheel after sawing - now that's some woodworm! Not the worst we've seen, by a long shot, but something certainly thought the wood was tasty!

The Colson: the divided wheel halves ready for gluing to the laminated core.

We made 5 sets of marudai and tama. The tama are weighted bobbins and the tama is the stand used with them for a traditional form of Japanese braiding called kumihimo. A friend is one of the North American experts and teachers of the craft, and we make sets for her students (and anyone else who wants to buy one.)

A closeup of some of the tama.

Joanne and Katie returned to play HG's and work on their psalteries. Here Joanne trims the width of her glued up instrument back on the bandsaw.

Katie cutting a side piece on the bandsaw.

Yes, Mr. W. in England,, it's the form for the you-know-which model. From vapor to a preliminary form in only 3 months - that's not bad, eh?

See last week for more pictures. I haven't written the new page yet, so you still have to page back through. Write me email and complain gently so I remember to do it, OK? The squeeky wheel gets the grease, or so they say... - but don't klimp MY wheel!
