The progress reports

Each week (hopefully) we update this page with new photos of instruments in progress. The updates are usually made on Monday.

We hope that you enjoy seeing the progress on your instrument and those of others who have them on order.

Week ending January 13, 2003

VG36: the test capo is almost done - finally! A few modifications and a few more parts... (and some inspiration.)

VG36: milling the keybox top with a shell mill - this is the largest milling cutter we have ever used.

.

VG37: the binding plaques are in on one side...

... and then on both, being sanded down.

VG37: because of the player's larger fingers, we are using a set of larger keyfronts. The idea for this curved key design with square keyshafts was borrowed from the work of HG innovator and pioneer Jean-Luc Bleton. Here the keys are being fitted to the key shafts prior to shaping and being cut apart.

The test keybox after keyfront shaping. (We also thought that this would make an appealing shape for a garden sculpture. )

LB4: sanding the body for the linings

"The Monk": Ready for shipment!

The Reichmann: The wheel surface was unacceptable, so we added a band of holly, and stained the sides of the wheel prior to refinishing.

The Colson: the new shaft is complete, thanks to Justin, who did some very tedious work to cut the threads for the crank.

Even the best tools act up sometimes. Here I have disassembled our favorite Dewalt random orbit sander for repairs.

The clock shelf: cutting a piece with a Japanese pull saw

See last week for more pictures.
