The progress reports

Each week we update this page with new photos of instruments in progress. The updates will usually be sometime on Monday, which is the end of our work week.

We hope that you enjoy seeing the progress on your instrument and those of others who have them on order.

Week ending March 3, 2003

Don't ask about the pickup truck and the swampy patch next to our house...

LB4: contouring the undersides of the braces

VG36: we put Katie to work on her other instrument ;-)

VG37: the upper and lower Bleton-style keys being final shaped

VG37: the wheel is scraped, the keys are in, the chanters are sounding. Ah!

VG39: the completed handle and shaft assembly

[no photo]

Justin's VG: Finishing, finishing, finishing...

The Pajot: the wheel has been faced and tapped for the shaft (at right)

The Colson: brazing a spacer onto the crank to support the new handle shaft

The Colson: stringing with the chanters to establish the wheel angle

Custer LaRue from the Baltimore Consort tries out a Minstrel Model HG at a recent early music workshop. Thanks to Katie Roe for the photo.

Lute-guitar: it's decided to stay a while and get fixed up. Here I've removed the soundboard so the braces, ribs, and rosette can be reglued

Some friends in Indianola (Rachel and Todd) were removing a big cherry tree. Quarter-sawn cherry is almost impossible to find, so we grabbed it. Here Justin and Todd debate whether they are likely to get a hernia lifting the half-trunk into the truck.

Alden discovers the joys of yet another tool: Justin's chainsaw. The trunk sections are being cut in half lengthwise to relieve the stresses of drying. After the wood is milled, it will still be several years (at least) until it is dry enough to use. Only then will we know if it was worth the effort, or whether we picked up some very expensive firewood.

RTDWHG: A pattern seems to be emerging. Perhaps it's a model of a bridge, or a set of locks...

RTDWHG: ...but no, it has a handle, and it's being built in a hurdy-gurdy shop, so it's probably a hurdy-gurdy of some kind.

See other weeks for more pictures.
