Taylor <rtaylor _at_ amp.csulb.edu> Subject: HG: George Sand and the Festival at St. Chartier George Sand and the Festival at St. Chartier ............ ............. ............ ............. Since just about everyone on this list is going to St. Chartier this year, listen up. !!! Why is the organization that organizes the festival called " The committe George Sand"? So what does the famous French writer George Sand have to do with the festival at St. Chartier? Read the book by Mr/Ms George Sand, "Les Maitres Sonneurs" or for those of us that are French impaired read the translation titled "The Master Pipers". You will not find out why your Hurdy Gurdy has problems when it is humid, or what are the best string gauges for those low G chanterelles, but you will find a story that takes place in and around the area of St. Chartier. Of course now that I said that I confess that I have not read it yet. So what do I know. Maybe I was waiting for the movie version starring Mel Gibson. I know that it is still in print so I am going to buy a copy. The translation is published by Oxford University Press ISBN 019283097X You can order it for $10.95 at Amazon.com or any other book store. Amazon rips you off with a $4.30 shipping charge. So go and support your local book store before they go out of business. r.t. _______________________________________________ Date: Sat, 01 Jul 2000 01:40:44 -0700 From: Alden & Cali Hackmann <hurdy _at_ silverlink.net> Subject: HG: "The Master Pipers" Cali and I have a copy which we are (slowly) reading. George Sand's country home of Nohant is very close to St. Chartier. We didn't manage a trip there ;-( though we did take an afternoon off from the festival to visit nearby Sarzay, which we heartily recommend. Sarzay is the 13th century chateau which is being almost single-handedly restored by a meter-reader for the French electric company. There's also a George Sand museum in le Chatre, which we saw from the outside but didn't visit - they were closed when we were available, and we were at St. Chartier when they were open. There's a great movie about her affair with Frederic Chopin, called "Impromptu", with Judy Davis as George Sand and Hugh Grant as Chopin. No hurdy-gurdies and no shots of Nohant, but not to be missed. In fact there's very little about gurdies in it. I'm not sure there's anything in fact. The story is about a chap called Tiennet. He takes up bagpipes. He falls in love with Brulette (but so does the narrator & the muleteer Huriel) There's a wedding scene in the grounds of the Chateau of St Chartier. There's also a strange (at least in my translation) initiation ceremony for Tiennet to become a member of the bagpipers "guild". My 4 sentence summary does not do justice to the story. But then again neither did the translation, I read. So now you may understand why Patrick Bouffard named a 3x Bourrée Tiennet? > The translation is published by Oxford University Press > > ISBN 019283097X > > You can order it for $10.95 at Amazon.com or any other book store. > Amazon rips you off with a $4.30 shipping charge. For the reader of the 21th centh , the story of the master pipers is on the edge of boring, we sometime fail to see what was so revolutionary and scandalous about it . Let's start with her name : Aurore Dupin , baroness of Du Devant , took the pen name George Sand because it was impossible to be published as a woman . In the same way she had a men's costume made for her when she lived in Paris , so she could walk in the streets, go in public places and observe the everyday life of the time. She also smoked cigars , wich was still a pleasure in those days . There is not much about HG , a short description of a HG player who came to get his master's examination at the same time as the hero of the novel. By the way , this examination and initiation ceremony is a complete fiction , Mrs Sand knew there were no such thing , it is added to the novel to show that in mid 19th cent, the old guilds , mostly of construction workers , had degenerated into corrupted organisations more interested in the fortune of the masters and their families rather than the preservation of a tradition of excellence . ( Many song guilds songs are in the last 33rpm record of the band Malicorne " Le tour de France ".) The interesting part for the HG player is the confrontation of the people from the Berry plains , area of the G/C tuning and major key tunes and the people from the Bourbonnais , forest covered hills area of the D/C tuning , the 2x minor key tunes and the big bagpipe " La Grande Bourbonnaise " with a 20" to 24" chanter and a 40" drone . It has to be seen and heard ! In fact , the controversy about the different tunings is still raging to this day.<g> Bring a wine bottle , and I will tell you more ( the local wine sold by the glass at the buvette is quite good but the small grocery store in the village 's main street sell better stuff at decent prices <g>) Henry _______________________________________________ Date: Sat, 01 Jul 2000 14:53:37 -0700 From: Alden & Cali Hackmann <hurdy _at_ silverlink.net> Subject: HG: Wine, Aurore, pegheads again Henry says: > Bring a wine bottle , and I will tell you more >( the local wine sold by the glass at the buvette is quite good but the >small grocery >store in the village 's main street sell better stuff at decent prices ><g>) There's also a nice "cave" in Le Chatre if you have a car, right next to the Lion d'Argent Hotel. A great place to hide for a little while if it's REALLY hot outside. ;-) Henry can, I hope, give you a list of Mde. Sand's paramours. It's a who's-who of European society at the time. A number of HG pegheads are reputed to be decorated with Mde. Sand's head (not the real thing, a smaller carving in wood ;-) ) because of her patronage of the folk arts including the music of the country people. My name is Tom and I should be receiving my first hurdy gurdy (Olympic Minstrel Model) within the next couple of weeks. Cali has been great to answer the millions of questions I have asked over the past couple of months. I love the sound of this instrument but beyond that I don't know much about it. I'm sure it will be a learning experience but I am happy to take it on. I live in Atlanta and would love to know if there is anyone around here who also plays. Besides my new found love of the hurdy gurdy I am also very interested in genealogy and where my mothers family is from in Bohemia. I would love to combine both of these but I'm not sure if anyone out there can tell me if the hurdy gurdy is even played there. I know that in one genealogy pamphlet I received it had an article on a Slovakian instrument (forget the name now) and it showed a picture of a maker in his shop. Lo and behold if he didn't also make the hurdy gurdy as well. Any chance someone out there might know more about this instrument in this area of Europe? I look forward to chatting with all of you in the future!
